“When sales closed on Monday (24 March), we had already clocked in around ₹21,400 crores,” said one of the two people cited above, requesting anonymity.

The state government had set a fiscal target of ₹20,950 crores for 2019-20 and this has since been raised to ₹22,700 crores for the 2020-21 financial year.

There was opposition in the village to the opening of the liquor store. There were also protests by two groups on March 28. Against this backdrop, Madhur Tahsildar and Excise officials had visited the site and postponed the opening of a liquor store.

Despite considerable opposition, officials opened a liquor store in the village this morning. The villagers objected to this and the police conducted a lathi search and arrested more than twenty people.

Some of the villagers were injured in the incident and the condition of one is serious. The villagers protested against the police brutality and the inauguration of the liquor barge and attacked the Madurai police station led by MLA DC Dammanna. The villagers have demanded legal action against the culprits.
